Italdesign knows concepts aren’t just about the future.

The legendary Italian coachbuilder has just unveiled a new EV prototype called the Asso di Picche In Movimento. The futuristic speed machine is an homage to a wedge-shaped sports car that the firm’s founder, Giorgetto Giugiaro, designed five decades ago.

The original Asso di Picche—which means “Ace of Spades” in Italian—made its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1973. It was the first of Giugiaro’s famed “Asso” concepts and was based on the two-door Audi 80 that debuted a year earlier. The designer borrowed the chassis and mechanics from the sensible German car and gave it a head-turning wedge-shaped body. The vehicle never went into production, but it would inspire two of the great rally cars of the next generation—the Audi Quattro and Lancia Delta.

Fifty years later, Italdesign has updated the stunning design for the electric era. The concept is even more wedge-shaped than its predecessor. The 2+2 coupe is 15.3 feet long, 6.4 feet wide, and just four feet tall, making it about as low-slung as EVs get. Its lines aren’t as sharp as those on the original car, especially around the wheels, but that makes it more aerodynamic. Our favorite detail is the way that the front end, roof, and tail panel seamlessly blend into one another. The only images of the interior are design sketches, but they share the exterior’s sleekness. Other forward-thinking touches include double-hinged doors that slide forward before rotating, cameras instead of side-view mirrors, and a digital lighting package.

We don’t know anything about the Asso di Picche In Movimento’s tech other than that it will be built on a next-generation platform. It’s safe to say it packs more of a punch than the original concept, which was powered by an inline-four that produced 54 hp and 68 ft lbs of torque. You’ll be able to charge the car via a port hidden away in the trunk.

Italdesign is only calling its new concept a digital show car at this point, but that doesn’t mean you won’t get a chance to drive it. The coachbuilder has shown a willingness to produce some of its more outlandish designs over the years, and, hopefully, the Asso di Picche In Movimento is next.
